I never shy away from the chance to learn something new and Saturday was no different. Sporting my new SIP hat**, I cruised down to Riverbench Vineyard & Winery in Santa Maria for a vineyard tour compliments of Central Coast Winegrowers Association (CCWGA).

Made it to Riverbench Vineyard & Winery!

I was immediately impressed with the turnout (all ages and backgrounds) and the desire to learn from the other attendees. Jim Stollberg, Vineyard Manager for Riverbench and owner of Maverick Farming Company, led us into the vineyard first. Jim was the perfect tour leader. He’s extremely knowledgeable and down to earth, allowing attendees to interrupt with all kinds of questions about what goes on in the vineyard during the spring. He talked about bud break (which is in full force at Riverbench), pruning styles, and how to protect your fresh, new buds from frost.

This bud already has all the fruit inside it for 2011 harvest!

Did you know that by turning on sprinklers during frost, the freezing of the water droplets creates heat which in turn protects the fragile buds from being frozen? I didn’t!

Jim also talked about the importance of getting SIP Certified and how it challenges them to become a cohesive company working together towards a common goal of sustainability and promoting a healthy environment.

Listening attentively!

No vineyard tour is complete without a wine tasting of the final product. Jim stuck around and chatted with all the guests as we sipped Riverbench’s fabulous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the patio. It was the perfect day and I loved all of the intelligent questions and education. Everyone left confident that they had learned something new!

Lining up to taste some fabulous wines!

Stay tuned for the next Vineyard tour with CCWGA at Laetitia Vineyard on May 21 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. RSVP with John Burke, Executive Director for CCWGA.

**SIP hats are available for purchase for $15! Email info@vineyardteam.org to purchase yours today!

Get your earplugs ready – we are about to toot our own horn, loudly! CCVT Executive Director Kris O’Connor was recently named the 2010 San Luis Obispo County Wine Industry Person of the Year. Woot! Woot!

CCVT Executive Director Kris O'Connor (3rd from left) along with other industry awards winners Clay Brock (4th from left) and members of the Dusi family.

The peer-driven award was chosen by members of Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, Independent Grape Growers of Paso Robles, Central Coast Vineyard Team (no comments from the peanut gallery — we played fair!), San Luis Obispo Vintners Association and past award recipients. Clay Brock of Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards in Templeton won Winemaker of the Year and Winegrape Grower of the Year went to an entire family: the Dusis of Dante Dusi Vineyard. All the winners were honored at a industry event on July 30 at the Mid State Fair.

In presenting the award to O’Connor, CCVT Founding Member and Past Chair Dana Merrill (Mesa Vineyard Management and SIP-certified Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery) recalled the year 1998, when “what we really needed was an executive director, but all we could afford was part-time.” O’Connor brought numerous skills to that part-time job, including having co-authored a textbook, extensive field experience in soils and irrigation, and fluency in Spanish.

Over the years, part-time became full-time – and then some – and Merrill noted that CCVT grew as well. Today, it represents some 80,000 acres in the tri-county area of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Monterey Counties, and the SIP Program can currently be applied to 10,000 acres, with more in the pipeline.

“It really shows you what can be accomplished with voluntary efforts,” said Merrill, “and a lot of that come back to what kind of leadership Kris provides.”

When O’Connor took the podium, one of her first phrases was “Who would have thought it?” Indeed, as she noted, “Sustainability was not a buzzword back in 1994 (CCVT’s first year). It’s been an amazing thing and so much credit should go to those founding members who dared think outside the box.”

Besides all the numbers that bear witness to CCVT’s and SIP’s growth and achievements, O’Connor also pointed out the success of the annual Earth Day Food & Wine Festival, saying “How cool is it to be able to celebrate Earth Day around farmers and other ag people?”

She also shared an anecdote which really brought home the vibrant, organic growth of CCVT. A few years ago, O’Connor was visiting some vineyards in Chile; when she starting her presentation about CCVT, one of the Chilean members of the group reached into his backpack and pulled out a piece of reference material he had already been using. It was a copy of the Spanish version of the CCVT’s PPS (Positive Points System).

How do you say “Woot! Woot!” in Spanish?

It was great to see Niels Udsen of Castoro Cellars recently honored by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance as their 2009 Paso Robles Wine Industry Person of the Year.

A longtime supporter of Central Coast Vineyard Team and the SIP program – some of Castoro’s vineyards are SIP certified, as well as being certified organic – Niels started as a local cellar rat back in 1981, when no one knew what a Paso Robles was. He and his wife Bimmer launched Castoro (Italian for Niels’ nickname: “Beaver”) in 1983, and over the years, it can certainly be considered one of the labels that helped put Paso Robles on the map as a stellar wine region.

Over the years, the Udsens quietly but steadily practiced responsible stewardship of their vineyards, and have clearly emerged as successful role models for sustainability and community leadership. To name just a few of their efforts: their employees are encouraged to recycle, there is no bottled water sold at the tasting room, the events room at the Templeton tasting room is largely powered by solar panels, and Castoro was one of the first wineries in the area to offer employee benefits.

Under the direction of Niels, Winemaker/Enologist Tom Myers, and Assistant Winemaker Mikel Olsten, Castoro Cellars has grown into a 60,000 case label (plus a thriving custom crush facility and mobile bottling service). Typically, there are about 15 varietals bottled, from the flagship Zinfandels to the more obscure varietals such as Cabernet Franc. Several blends and vineyard-designate wines are always on hand as well, but – despite the breadth of available wines – we’ve never found Castoro to be about quantity. All the wines are classic varietal interpretations, some with forward fruit if the grape and vintage suggest it, but the rest show veteran finesse and restraint in the winemaking process, making them wonderful wines to pair with food.

With chilly winter temperatures gripping much of the nation, it may be an odd time to think about the dangers of heat stroke to farmworkers, but such was the topic of a recent story on the Capital Press website.

A Napa Valley businessman has laudably developed and patented a first aid/cooling station for farmworkers. The portable trailer offers pop-up shade, water, etc. and we hope it will catch on with vineyard owners and managers, even if their only motivation is avoiding litigation.

We’d like to point out, however, in the summer of 2009 a local grower – George Donati of Pacific Vineyard Company, a CCVT member and Sustainability in Practice Certified™ grower — was ahead of the curve and launched what we think is a better version. Yes, we may be biased, but have a look at page 3 of this CCVT newsletter. The overhanging cover of the portable trailer offers far more shade coverage, plus “trash and recycling containers, as well as a bucket with chlorine water so workers can sanitize their shears during breaks.” Also, in keeping with Pacific Vineyard Company’s longtime attention to the social part of the sustainability equation, the trailers are available for workers at all times, not just when the rising mercury triggers compliance with OSHA rules.

Keynote speaker was Deborah Lyons, an environmental sustainability specialist for Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, the largest information technology company in the country and recently named as the greenest company in America by Newsweek magazine.

According to The Tribune’s Biz Buzz Report on November 11, 2009, “Lyons’ message was that saving the planet is good for businesses — and the bottom line. She came to San Luis Obispo hoping to inspire local enterprises to measure their energy usage and waste, be efficient with their resources and find new ways to save costs. But after listening to what county businesses were doing to reduce their carbon footprint, she said, ‘I’m the one who’s inspired’.”

The couple launched Joebella Coffee, a combination of their names that also connotes “beautiful cup of coffee,” shortly after moving to the Central Coast in 2003. From the outset, they have made the commitment to be small batch roasters of fairly traded and naturally grown coffees, and they are also staunch supporters of local sustainability efforts.
At the anniversary party, we were treated to an array of beautiful shrimp from Pier 46 Seafood in Templeton, rustic sandwiches and a cheese plate from 15 Degrees C Wine Shop & Bar in Templeton, baked goods from Colby Jack Café & Bakery in Atascadero, Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates in San Luis Obispo (also committed to fair trade policies), letter “J” adorned tiramisu from Artisan Restaurant in Paso Robles (which showcases locally grown and sustainable foods), and Central Coast Brewing’s Double Dark Espresso Porter made with Joebella coffee.

As if all that weren’t enough for our taste buds, we also got to sample the premier release of Nectar Ale’s Black Xantus, an American oak bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout infused with Joebella’s single origin (meaning the coffee is from one specific country of origin) Mexican coffee, the first new release from the beer label in many years. Made locally at Firestone Walker Brewing Company in Paso Robles, this creamy, dessert-worthy beer has luscious notes of coffee, caramel, cocoa and black cherry – all signature flavors of the coffee itself. Joseph explained that FW’s Brewmaster Matt Brynildson already had the concept for the stout-plus-coffee brew and even the name, which celebrates a rare Mexican hummingbird (all Nectar ales sport hummingbirds on their labels), when he approached Joebella.
“They definitely wanted to use a local coffee roaster, Matt came in and we tried about six single origin coffees so see how they paired with the stout,” explained Joseph. As luck would have it, the Mexico coffee more than fit the bill, and – although it will have extremely limited distribution — the Black Xantus is already creating quite a buzz in craft beer circles. Also worth noting is that the beer’s PR info is visibly touting Joebella’s business stance with this wording, “… infused with fresh organic/ Fair Trade coffee …”

The spirit of Friday night, and the need to enjoy some social time with my co-workers, I was off to Paso Wine Centre (this wine bar doesn’t have a web site but check out Paso Winos’ very informative blog). I walked into the modernly designed room complete with hardwood floors, stainless steel counters, and black leather box-shaped couches to find myself staring at a wall of wines. These wines were hooked up to a gadget that looked like a cross between a display case and a beer tap, it’s an enomatic wine-dispensing machine. This machine removes excess air from the wine bottles allowing an open bottle’s shelf-life to be extended to up to three weeks.

“Wall of wines” is not an exaggeration; Paso Wine Centre offers their patrons the chance to taste from almost fifty different wines, most of which find their origins within the Paso Robles Wine region. And just in case that isn’t enough to peak your interest, they also offer twice as many bottles for purchase. Once we broke the trance that the wall of wine had over us, Beth, my Friday night partner, and I walked up to the register to charge our credit-cardesque looking wine-cards so we could begin tasting from “the wall.”

Paso Wine Centre is a great place to taste a lot of wines for a reasonable price. First, charge your card with money, then use that card in the wine machine to purchase 1 oz. pours ranging in price from about $1.25 to $3.00. And, as if the selection and the ability to try so many different wines didn’t already wow me, I felt even better knowing that for each sip I purchased raised money for a good cause. 100% of profits from the Centre goes to their charity, Wine for Water.

Wine for Water is a non-profit dedicated to bring clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene education to people around the world. A quick browse through their website taught me some alarming facts: 1 billion people don’t have daily access to clean and safe drinking water, and every day 6,000 people die from diseases caused by drinking unsafe water. Wine for Water is dedicated to building wells in areas where they can change these startling facts by bringing clean water to people in need. They have a great website that provides a lot more information about these problems and their mission to help people in need.

Taste of SLO has done it again, I thoroughly enjoyed myself last Wednesday night as I wandered, well due to the great turn out, shuffled up and down the Mission Plaza tasting all that San Luis Obispo has to offer. This year’s disco themed event came complete with go go dancers, a giant disco ball, great music, and of course fabulous food and wine. The best of the best of San Luis Obispo restaurants made their appearances with delicious samplers; Tuna tacos from Native Lounge to mushroom soup topped with grated espresso bean from Mother’s Tavern to profiteroles from Mama’s Meatballs, can only begin to explain the range choices that were laid out in front of me. While samplers may sound like child’s play compared to the gigantic meals we are served at some restaurants, with a choice of samplers from over 30 restaurants I found that my graceful walk into the event had turned into a bit more of a waddle as I left the evening.

As if all that good food wasn’t enough every restaurant was paired with a local winery pouring their best. Mmmmm … food and wine what could make the night any better? My bliss turned into pure joy when I saw that a number of our SIP Certified wineries were represented this year. Thank you to Baileyana & Tangent Wineries, Castoro Cellars, Hope Family Wines, Laetitia Vineyard & Winery, Saucelito Canyon Vineyard, Tolosa Winery, and Wolff Vineyards for bringing delicious, sustainably grown wines to such a wonderful event. As I reflect back on the night, and listen to my tummy grumble, I must say I am already looking forward to another yummy night at Taste of SLO next year, hopefully with even more SIP Certified wines to enjoy.

After another day of 100 plus degree weather, I laid on my bare bed with no covers trying to will my overheated body to sleep – I had it! With more enthusiasm than I had managed to muster all day in this extreme heat, I marched downstairs to turn up the AC. Before I made it to the thermostat I hit the freezer, inspiring me to use a cooling alternative. I pulled out the leftover bag of ice from a previous Margarita Night, threw it a Ziploc bag, climbed back into bed, and snuggled up to my new rock hard version of a teddy bear.

Finally I could get to sleep, this new cool down method went swimmingly until it literally went SWIMmingly. 4:30 in the morning I woke up in a panic WHY IS MY BED SOAKING WET!? Well the Ziploc bag had not quite done its job.

The following night I improved my system by freezing water in Tupperware and then for extra leakage protection throwing it into a Ziploc bag. A few dry nights later I have to say I think I have perfected the ice cold, rock hard version of a teddy bear.

My middle of the night over-heated panic attack got me wondering, how much energy we waste those few days a year when the temperatures soar? After perusing the web for information I found just what I suspected, during hot summers is when we consume the most energy. In fact, our AC units often use more electricity than any other appliance in the house, they can account for 60-70% of our electricity bills! For more shocking information about AC units I would suggest checking out this site dedicated to Saving Electricity.

Below I’ve listed a few tips for keeping your house cool during these scorching days, I would love to see your suggestions. For more tips you may want check out the U.S. Department of Energy, California Energy Commission’s Consumer Energy Center , and Helium’s article on How to reduce energy consumption during the summer.

Sleeping with frozen water, in a tupper ware, in a ziplock bag

Being conscious about opening your windows at night to let in the cool air and then closing them during the hot day

Use fans to keep the air circulating, air movement can help you feel cooler than you actually are

Shade your windows with blinds, towels, planted trees, whatever gets the trick done
