More Than Organic Wine - Welcome to SIP!

For the past 15 years, we’ve helped growers, vineyards and consumers rethink their approach to sustainability – it goes beyond organic wine. SIP is about great wines, healthy vineyards and the well being of workers (in every aspect) – maybe you’ll find yourself wanting to “sip” some of our tasty community once you learn more!

While many consumers are dedicated to looking for wines labeled as “green wine” or “organic wine,” SIP Certification is a unique combination beyond those two labels. Imagine a wine that builds community between vineyards, workers and the land. A new way to look at sustainable agriculture to ensure that:

  • Fertile soils exist to produce hearty grapes for years to come
  • Vineyards and their workers are both dedicated to the same sustainable practices
  • Green wine and eco-savvy consumers have yet another choice they can make – one that supports both the land and the people that create their favorite wines.

Behr Family
Oso Libre
Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County

Becoming SIP Certified was very important at Oso Libre. Since the Behr’s relocated from LA sustainability has been a way of life on the family owned vineyard and winery. In 1996 Chris and Linda purchased 90 acres of open farmland, used a process called water dousing or water witching to find water and began establishing their property. An 80-foot electric generating wind machine and solar panels allow the winery to be off the grid, Suffolk and Baby-Doll sheep fertilize and control weeds, and Chris manages the chores on his horse (an electric two-wheeled, off-road Segway). In 1997 one of their sons, Jeffrey and wife Elizabeth, relocated to Templeton to help run all aspects of the business. the ranch name, Oso Libre, is a blend of the families’ names, Behr and Freeland.

Learning viticulture and how to turn fruit into great sustainably grown wines has been an endless and passionate journey. The family offers wine club members Angus beef raised on 60 acres of graze-land. Winemaking and serving wines in the new tasting room is more work than they ever imagined but at the end of the day the family counts their blessings and agree that the grass is always greener at Oso Libre Ranch!
