Meet the SIP Farmers: Rodger Mohme

December 2, 2012

We all enjoy getting to know people better; whether it’s interesting facts, thoughts, or humorous tidbits. So we came up with some questions to ask the farmers of SIP that we feel will give us a more interesting view of them behind the soil and vines. In this post we’ll hear about Rodger Mohme, owner/grower at Colina d’Oro Vineyards. Classic rock or classic country? Classic rock Favorite spot in the vineyard? Anywhere there isn't a gopher, squirrel, or some other beast to chase down Number of years farming? 12 Number of years with current company?... [Read more...]

Cinnamon Rolls with Laetitia XD

November 19, 2012

Generally my cooking leans toward the healthy but I don' t mind slipping in a tasty treat now and then. Most people call them cinnamon rolls but in my childhood home these delicious goodies were always called sticky buns for their rich, caramely topping. This recipe is interesting in that it adds oatmeal to the dough...interesting in that oatmeal in in there but it does not seem to change the texture much. And when you get to the sticky bun topping I recommend making a little extra. I had to do some research on how... [Read more...]

Homemade Soup on the Cheap

October 22, 2012

Empty fridge? End of the month? I have the answer...soup. Seriously. Once you have cooked up a homemade soup or two you can easily forge out on your own. When you find yourself repeatedly opening the fridge as if its contents will have suddenly changed from small stash of condiments to overflowing with gourmet goods I bet you have soup ingredients in there. Recently, after spending a long weekend away and coming home to a busy schedule (and empty cupboard) I found myself in the predicament of little time and nothing to eat. I hate... [Read more...]

Pot Roast With Gremolata and Halter Ranch Cabernet

October 15, 2012

The beauty of cooking with wine is drinking what remains in the bottle! As we get our first dose of rain this fall, I settled in for the ultimate comfort food meal of pot roast paired with a smooth, rich Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the first vineyards to be SIP Certified, Halter Ranch. Pot Roast Recipe [caption id="attachment_3889" align="alignright" width="150"] Pot Roast With Halter Ranch Cabernet[/caption] 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 boneless beef check roast (4-5 lbs.) 6 cloves of garlic, chopped 1/3 c. flour 2 Tbsp. tomato paste 1 Tbsp. beef base (Better... Chatting with Chris Cocchiaro

September 25, 2012

What brought you to the wine industry?I grew up around wine, and always found it to be more than just a beverage. Spending a summer in Perugia, studying the Italian language and culture really opened my eyes to the much broader world of wines, and set me on a path to getting into the business. I drank a lot of sweet Vino Bianco Frizzante that summer, but left with a handful of dry wines from local producers Ricasoli and Lungarotti as I recall. Why is CCVT important to you?CCVT is the only sustainability group I... [Read more...]

Murphys

September 10, 2012

[caption id="attachment_3703" align="alignleft" width="145"] Murphys[/caption] This summer I had the opportunity to speak about SIP Certification to the farmers in Calaveras County in a fabulous little town called Murphys. Now Murphys, California is a about a million miles from nowhere and yet this picturesque town has loads to offer. Located in the Sierra foothills, many of the goldrush-era buildings are still in use today including my lodging, the Murphys Historic Hotel. The shaded streets (street really - this is a 2,000 person town) are lined with fine cuisine, neat shops, and of course, wineries. Murphys... [Read more...]

Baked Chicken Recipe

May 17, 2012

I have been thinking about roasting a whole bird...for years. The time had come for me to roll up my sleeves and dig into the task. And, I am happy to report that there is little to report! I started with a trusty internet search for baked chicken recipe (of which there are thousands). Fortunately they are all rather similar so I went with a fresh herb and lemon rub. It is really a simple process: remove innards, rinse, dry, stuff, rub with herbs and spices, place in oven, and wait. Baked Chicken Recipe  3-4lb... [Read more...]

A Video Synopsis of Earth Day Food & Wine

May 7, 2012

While roaming through the Earth Day Food and Wine Festival at Pomar Junction Winery, my wife and I were sure to get a bunch of photos and video of all the happenings. In a previous post (linked here) we included the photos in a handy dandy little slideshow that you should check out if you missed it, but in this post we wanted to share some of the event that we captured via video. So check it out, enjoy the music by The Mother Corn Shuckers, and be sure to join us next year for... [Read more...]

Sitting Down with Amy Freeman, Winemaker for EOS Estate Winery

May 3, 2012

How did you get into the wine industry? My roots are in the Midwest, specifically Wisconsin and Minnesota. I moved to California in 2001 after graduating with a BS in Nutrition from the University of Minnesota.  Two of my siblings had settled in California and worked in wine production, I visited them often and had become a pretty avid surfer, and I decided to check out the central coast.  I was incredibly lucky to have an amazing first harvest working as a lab tech at Byron Winery in the Santa Maria Valley.  That experience largely...
