Wine for Sangria

November 12, 2012

Sometimes it is nice to get a taste of summer when the weather is chilly and gray. Initially I was really going for summer fare with a recipe for sangria sorbet. Naturally, making sangria sorbet means making sangria first. As it turns out, the sangria was too good to freeze! The first step is picking wine for sangria. I decided not to over think this and simply choose a Pinot from Tolosa Winery that I love. From there, you basically add some fruit and brandy and presto summer.

Sangria

3 c mixed berries (fresh or frozen)

3 plumbs, sliced

2 Tbs. sugar

1 vanilla bean, scraped

1 c brandy

1 bottle of red wine

Juice from 1 orange plus 1 sliced orange

Warm mixed berries, plumbs, sugar and vanilla bean in a sauce pan until sugar melts (and berries are unfrozen). Remove from heat. Add brandy, wine, orange juice and orange slices. Let set overnight. Strain juice from fruit and discard orange slices. Serve over ice with berries and an orange garnish can’t hurt.

For a blended cocktail, puree reserved mixed berries and plumbs and stir in reserved juice.
