A Tale of Two Seasons

Jim Stollberg

Jim Stollberg

Maverick Farming Company - Owner

Jim Stollberg finds himself standing in fields quite often. Between managing a few thousand acres of vineyards around the Central Coast and coaching his twin sons’ baseball teams through the years, Jim finds balance in the changing of his seasons.

Raised in the Santa Maria area, Jim attended St. Joseph’s High School and from there, went to UC Davis to play baseball and study engineering. Surrounded by the high performing agriculture environment, Jim was drawn to grape farming because of the lifestyle and thought it could get him back on the Central Coast. After time working in Lodi and Sonoma, Jim made it back to the Central Coast and now operates Hampton and Maverick Farming Companies - which farms a number of SIP Certified vineyards including Riverbench, White Hills, and Rancho Los Alamos. Jim mentions, “I always encourage clients to become SIP Certified so we can operate at the highest level on our vineyards and for our employees.”

Now raising twin boys in their teens, Jim’s been a coach for their baseball teams over the last eight years. In that time, he’s become an integral part of the Santa Maria baseball community coaching and developing players from all skill levels, and still makes the time to take his family to their beloved LA Dodgers games a few times a season.

Baseball is a Spring sport with training starting around mid-January and wrapping up in July just in time for Jim to focus his energy back into the grapes and gear up for the harvest season ahead.

“There’s a period in November and December when I get some downtime, but it really is a great lifestyle having these two seasons anchor the year.”
