Sustainability Starts with People

September 21, 2026

When we talk about sustainability in wine, practices like conserving water, enhancing soil quality, and supporting biodiversity often come to mind. But sustainability is about more than caring for the land; it’s about caring for the people behind every bottle.

SIP Certified brands follow Standards designed to support vineyard and winery workers and create safer, more supportive workplaces. Practices include providing safety training and appropriate protective equipment, maintaining access to clean drinking water and sanitation, offering opportunities for continuing education and professional development, and establishing clear workplace policies and communication.

The Standards also encourage members to look beyond day-to-day requirements and consider practices that contribute to workers’ long-term well-being, from competitive compensation and benefits to opportunities for advancement.

For many, these practices are simply part of running a responsible operation. But they’re also an important part of your sustainable story—and one your customers may rarely get to see.

Show the People Behind the Wine

These efforts are worth talking about. Consumers may see the vineyard, the wine, and the sustainability seal, but they don’t always see the people behind them.

Bring the People part of sustainability into your marketing with stories that make your practices tangible:

  • Introduce your team. Spotlight a longtime employee, vineyard manager, irrigator, or other team member and the expertise they bring.
  • Share learning in action. Post a photo from a safety training, continuing education course, or team meeting and explain why ongoing education matters to your operation.
  • Celebrate milestones. Recognize work anniversaries, promotions, certifications, or other accomplishments that demonstrate investment in your team.
  • Explain a practice. Give customers a behind-the-scenes look at something they might otherwise never consider.

The key is to show, not just tell. Instead of simply saying you value your employees, share the real people, practices, and investments that demonstrate what that commitment looks like.

After all, sustainability isn’t only about caring for the land. It’s about caring for the people who care for it.
