Rethinking Wine Packaging
At SAMsARA Wine Co., sustainability is built into every detail, right down to the bottle itself.
In 2022, the winery made two bold moves: sourcing bottles that are 22% lighter than standard bottles and eliminating foil capsules.
For decades, heavy bottles and foil capsules were associated with premium wine. But the SAMsARA team saw an opportunity to align their packaging with their values.
Lighter bottles mean fewer emissions during shipping and less material used in production — a small change with measurable impact.
Capsules are difficult to recycle, often end up in landfills, and require additional materials and energy to produce. By removing them, the winery reduced waste, eliminated excess inventory, and streamlined its materials.
Before making the transition, they asked their community for feedback. More than 90% of their 400 club members supported the move toward more sustainable packaging.
While a small portion of longtime wine enthusiasts initially missed the traditional aesthetic, most embraced the change once they understood the reasoning.
“Once we explained our vision, our customers were on board,” says Neal Kennedy, Assistant Winemaker. “When they pop the cork, they realize it’s what’s in the glass that matters.”
Their commitment to energy efficiency extends beyond the bottle. SAMsARA’s shipping materials are made from 71% recycled content and are 100% recyclable. Pulp inserts are produced from 100% recycled paper in California, and the boxes themselves are sourced from neighboring city Madera, keeping materials local and reducing transportation impacts.
In the tasting room, sustainability is part of the guest experience. Club members who reuse their SAMsARA wine totes are entered into a raffle. What began as a quarterly incentive has turned into a habit — so many guests now bring their bags back that the winery often has extras on hand.
Corks are also collected and repurposed. A display container in the tasting room fills with used corks before they’re delivered to recycling partners and local artists, where they’re transformed into artwork, corkboards, and new cork products.
Through lighter bottles, reduced materials, recycled packaging, and a willingness to rethink tradition, SAMsARA shows that energy efficiency isn’t always about dramatic overhauls.
Sometimes, it’s about making thoughtful changes; reducing, reusing, and recycling wherever possible.
