Murphys

This summer I had the opportunity to speak about SIP Certification to the farmers in Calaveras County in a fabulous little town called Murphys. Now Murphys, California is a about a million miles from nowhere and yet this picturesque town has loads to offer.

Located in the Sierra foothills, many of the goldrush-era buildings are still in use today including my lodging, the Murphys Historic Hotel. The shaded streets (street really – this is a 2,000 person town) are lined with fine cuisine, neat shops, and of course, wineries. Murphys has about a dozen family owned boutique wineries and naturally I had to sample some local libations. While waiting for my dinner at Grounds, I ordered a glass of excellent Zin from Newsome-Harlow.

If you are looking for a little activity after all that great food and wine, the outdoors activities are endless. From hiking to the Big Trees to caving (I took a great tour in the Mercer Caverns) I was wishing I had more time to visit…

…which is why I am going back!

Have you been to Murphys? Tell me your tips before I make my next trip.
